You lost me at…

The lost and found for the *.me.at network. Bring a mistyped address, a dead short link or a page that moved, and leave with the right one.

Names, hosts and aliases all match. Enter opens the first result.

A torn piece of a contour map. A dotted trail wanders across it, loops back on itself twice and ends at an X, beside a signpost whose arms all point different ways.

What happens between a wrong address and the right one

Follow the dotted line. Every stop on it runs on this site today, in this order.

  1. A wrong address still lands somewhere

Any path this site does not know answers with a real 404 status and a full page: this search, the directory and the closest guesses. Arrive with ?from= and the address you tried is shown back to you as plain text. The only links offered beside it are sites from the network's public directory.

  2. The spelling gets read

A missed path is compared with every public site name and its known aliases. Close matches come back ranked in 3 confidence bands, next to pages on the same site with a similar address. When nothing is close, the page says so and does not invent a match.

  3. Short links resolve, or refuse

A path shaped like a short code is looked up exactly, never guessed. There are 4 possible answers: forward, ask first, withhold, or not found. A link that was disabled or flagged as suspicious never forwards, and its destination is not shown.

  4. Retired pages say so

A page taken down on purpose answers 410 Gone instead of 404, and if it moved, a card tells you where it went. The list of retired pages is new: so far it holds only this site's own test entries.

  5. The archive is the last resort

Only when nothing in the network matches does the page ask the Internet Archive for a saved copy. That lookup gives up after 2.5 seconds, so it never holds the page. A link to report the broken address is always at the bottom.

  6. Nobody is moved without asking

Automatic forwarding is off until you switch it on at the bottom of this page. Even then it fires only for a near-certain spelling match with a clear lead over the runner-up, after a 4 second countdown you can cancel. What earlier visitors clicked can reorder the suggestions. It never decides where you are sent.

Found, and still missing

The first row works today. The second row is planned: written down, one of them already built, and not serving anyone yet.

Found

  • 8 languages

The whole hub, this page included, is served in 8 languages.

    Working today

  • Private hosts stay invisible

Search and the directory are built from the public list only. Looking for an internal site looks exactly like looking for a name that never existed.

    Working today

  • Misses expire

When miss recording is switched on, raw records are deleted after 90 days. Nothing personal is stored.

    Working today

Still missing

  • A catch for every *.me.at host

An edge worker that sends any unknown host in the network here is written and tested. It is not deployed. It waits on the network's DNS move.

    Planned

  • Miss reports from every site

Every site's 404 page already carries the reporting beacon. It sends nothing until an ingest address is configured, and that switch is still off.

    Planned

  • you.lost.me.at

The whole sentence as an address. The name is reserved, and blocked on a certificate that covers a two-level host.

Or try one of these

End of the trail. If the search came up empty, every live destination in the network is listed below, and each row opens the real site.

This page learns from misses to sharpen its suggestions. Nothing personal is stored.
